World Background

Much of the campaign centers around the village of Hommlet. Hommlet is nestled near the Gnarley Forest, in the Viscounty of Verbobonc, protected by the Archclericy of Veluna. The region of the world where Veluna is found is known as the Flanaess, on the continent of Oerik, on the world of Oerth. It is approximately a day and a half riding distance from the village of Nulb, and approximately 3 days riding distance from the nearest major city, Verbobonc.

Over the course of the last 70 years, the Village of Hommlet grew from a few tiny farm houses in the wilderness to a bucolic village at a crossroads of two trade routes. For most of it’s history, Hommlet was a peaceful, prosperous village. While there was the occasional drunken tussle between two of the patrons of the Welcome Wench, the people of the town were mostly undisturbed.

13 years ago, a collection of layabouts and ne’er do wells established a collection of hovels and small buildings at what would become the village of Nulb. Over the course of 3 years, the village grew, fed by piracy on the river, and raiders on the roads nearby, and they established a dark new temple nearby, devoted to the idea that mankind was at the mercy of evil forces, in the wind and waves, stone and flame. all components of the world around him, and that appeasement must be made to those dark forces, the Temple of Elemental Evil.

Seeing this temple as an abomination, and hearing the complaints of the good people of Hommlet, the Viscount of Verbobonc and the Archcleric of Veluna raised a great army, including allies from Furondy to assault the fortified temple. Ten years ago, this army assaulted the temple, driving out masses of evil priests, slaying hundreds of their dark and twisted servants. After the forces of Veluna, Verbobonc, and Furondy withdrew, they left a great enchantment, binding the evil of Temple from escaping, and doing more harm to the countryside.

While some of the followers of the temple took up residence in the countryside around Hommlet, they have had relative peace for 9 years. Nulb was largely razed by the armies assaulting the temple, but it has rebuilt. While not a friendly place, it is nevertheless a better neighbor to Hommlet than it once was.

However, in the last year, reports have reached Verbobonc and Veluna of raiders again assaulting caravans on the roads in the vicinity. Though the binding magics are still in place, there seems to be some remnant of evil that has survived within the Temple.
